Benjamin F. Farrand Jr. death record. Died in New Portalnd 1915, Sep 21. age 62. Born in New Portland. Farmer. Father Benjamin F Faranad, mother Betsey Merry, both born in New Vineyard.

Maine was actually once part of Massachusetts, rather than having shared a border. Evidently in 1815 they began campaigning to be a separate state. Massachusetts wasn't treating them very neighborly. Maine was made a separate state in 1820 as part of the Missouri Compromise. Missouri, a pro-slave region, wanted to join the Union, but abolitionists feared this would give slave states the upper hand, so Missouri was admitted to the union as a slave state, and Maine as a free state. They seem to have always just barely shared a border. This means that any life events reported after 1820 that happened before 1820, such as a birth on a death certificate, or the census, might be confused about whether it was in Massachusetts or Maine.
